What's Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle, complementary practice that safely works alongside your regular healthcare or self-care routines.
It originated in Japan in the early 20th century and, since being introduced to the West in the 1930s, has become a popular method that can help ease stress, release emotional blockages, enhance clarity, and support your body on all levels: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.
The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words:
Rei – meaning ‘higher power’ or ‘universal force’
Ki – meaning ‘life energy’
Loosely translated, Reiki means 'universal or spiritually guided life force energy'.
While Reiki can be deeply supportive, it is most effective when viewed as part of a broader, holistic approach to wellbeing.
YOUR HOLISTIC PATH
Reiki is one of the many wonderful tools you can use to bring more balance and harmony into your life.
It supports you, but it doesn’t replace what you already do to care for yourself.
Spending time in nature, nourishing your body with good food, moving regularly, resting well, and nurturing meaningful connections are all essential parts of wellbeing. Equally important is learning to set healthy boundaries and honour your own pace.
Your wellbeing is created through the small, conscious actions you take each day, the ones that resonate with you and truly fill your cup.
And if you wish, Reiki can be part of your toolkit.
How Does Reiki Work?
Reiki practitioners don’t use their own energy.
During their training, they go through a process called attunement, which opens their energy field and allows them to connect with this universal energy.
Through light touch, or even no touch at all, the practitioner channels this energy and directs it to where it’s most needed in your body.
- Feeling stressed, emotionally drained, or burned out?
- Anxious, sleep-deprived, or struggling with physical tension or aches?
- Trouble focusing, feeling indecisive, or lacking motivation?
- Craving clarity, inner peace, or a deeper spiritual connection?
These are all signs your energy needs balancing. If any of these sound familiar, keep reading.
Thanks to the principle of 'energetic resonance', when your practitioner connects with Reiki energy — one of the highest vibrational frequencies — and channels it to you, your energy, which might be disrupted by stress, anxiety or fatigue, begins to resonate with and align to the higher, more balanced frequency.
By inducing deep relaxation, Reiki quiets the mind and soothes the body’s stress response. This gentle energetic shift guides your nervous system from 'fight or flight' into 'rest and restore', allowing healing, digestion, and balance to return naturally.
Reiki Might Surprise You
5 Things to Know
1. Reiki is not a religion
Though Reiki has Japanese roots and is sometimes linked to Buddhism, it is not a religion.
At Experience Reiki, we welcome everyone, regardless of beliefs, background, or spiritual practice.
You might believe in God, or have no religious beliefs at all. You might feel guided by the Universe, a Guardian Angel, your Spirit Animal, or your Ancestors... or maybe none of these concepts resonate with you.
Reiki works for anyone, and it will work for you too.
There’s nothing dark or magical about Reiki. It’s a gentle, loving energy practice used worldwide for healing and balance.
2. Reiki is not a massage
Some people expect hands-on work or gentle pressure and may be surprised to find that the practitioner places their hands lightly over certain areas, or sometimes doesn’t touch at all.
This is completely normal. Reiki can feel deeply relaxing, similar to a massage, but it works on a different level.
There is no pressure or manipulation, simply energy flowing where it is needed.
3. Reiki works remotely
Yes, really! You don’t need to be in the same room for Reiki to be effective.
Distance Reiki works because energy isn’t limited by space or time.
Energy flows freely, much like a thought or a feeling, allowing you to sense someone’s emotions even when they are far away.
Through intention, symbols, and training, your practitioner can connect to your energy field and offer the same benefits you’d receive in person. Visit our Distance Reiki page to learn more.
4. There are 5 Reiki principles that guide the practice
- Just for today I will not be angry
- Just for today I will not worry
- Just for today I will be grateful for my many blessings
- Just for today I will do my work honestly
- Just for today I will be kind to every living thing
These reminders invite us to live more fully. You do not need long-term plans or challenging goals that are difficult to keep up with. Every day is a new day, a new chance to be the best version of yourself.
Let go of what no longer serves you, like anger or worry. Be grateful for what you have in the present moment. Stay true to the values you believe in. Honour the people in your life, and be kind to strangers, too.
At Experience Reiki, we bring these principles into every session, every intention, and every interaction.
5. You don’t have to say anything during the session
You’re welcome to talk about what’s going on in your life, or say nothing at all. It’s entirely up to you.
Reiki doesn’t require words. You don’t have to explain or justify anything.
Your practitioner will sense where your energy is blocked and gently focus there.
Want to open up? We’re here to listen.
Want quiet time and space? We respect that deeply.
Want some feedback after the session? Just ask.
Your experience is yours, and we’re here to support it, not direct it.
✨ Bonus fact:
You don’t need to believe in Reiki or fully understand how it works to feel its effects.
Being open to receiving this beautiful universal life force energy can certainly help, especially if you set the intention to let it flow freely through your body and support your balance. But Reiki works regardless.
All you need is a quiet moment. We’ll meet you there.
What can Reiki do for you?
Reiki is natural, subtle, and powerful. It works quietly in the background, helping your whole system — body, mind, and energy — gently come back into balance and feel truly aligned with your inner self.
